read lessYoga's origins can be traced back to ancient India, over 5,000 years ago. There's not a single inventor credited with creating yoga, but rather it developed over time by philosophers and yogis who documented their practices and beliefs in ancient texts.
Here's a breakdown of yoga's development:
Early Roots (Pre-Vedic Period - 2700 BCE): Archaeological evidence suggests some form of yoga practice existed even before the Vedic period.
Vedic Period (1700 - 1100 BCE): The word "yoga" first appears in the Rig Veda, one of the oldest surviving texts. Here, it refers to a discipline for uniting the mind and body.
Upanishad Period (800 - 600 BCE): The Upanishads, philosophical texts of Hinduism, delve deeper into yoga's spiritual aspects. They discuss concepts like self-realization and moksha (liberation).
Classical Period (200 BCE - 500 CE): Patanjali, often referred to as the "father of modern yoga," systematized the existing knowledge of yoga practices in his Yoga Sutras. This text outlines the eight limbs of yoga, a framework for achieving spiritual liberation.
