I am naturopathy doctor and yoga trainer with 5 year experience.

Three factors together distinguish Bikram yoga from other forms of hatha yoga: (1) the set sequence of 26 asanas and two breathing exercises (Figure 1), (2) the heated environment (40.6°C, 40% humidity), and (3) the instructional dialogue.

Hatha Yoga is a centuries-old practice that encompasses a wide range of physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation practices. It's known for its versatility, with classes often tailored to meet the needs of practitioners, whether they seek relaxation, strength building, or stress relief.

On the other hand, Bikram Yoga, created by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s, adheres to a specific sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises, performed in the same order in each session. One distinguishing feature of Bikram Yoga is the heated room, typically set to around 95-108 degrees Fahrenheit (35-42 degrees Celsius) with a humidity level of around 40%. This heat is believed to increase flexibility, promote detoxification through sweating, and enhance the benefits of the practice.

While Hatha Yoga classes can vary greatly in style, intensity, and focus, Bikram Yoga classes follow a standardized format, with instructors guiding practitioners through the same sequence of postures in a heated environment. Both practices offer physical benefits such as increased strength, flexibility, and stress reduction, but they cater to different preferences and goals in terms of structure, environment, and focus.
