Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardised admission test for graduate schools and business schools. Candidates planning to pursue a Masters of Science (MS), MBA, MEM or doctoral degree in various countries, especially the US, are required to take up GRE exam.
GRE is organised by the Educational testing system (ETS). It is the largest non-profit private educational testing and assessment organisation. Annually about 20 million GRE exams are conducted in the US and other countries.
According to the ETS, in the year 2017, about 5,59,254 individuals took the GRE general test in over 1,000 test centres in 160 countries. For masters and doctoral degrees, about thousands of graduate schools around the world accept GRE scores. More than 1,100 business schools including top-ranked MBA programs and currently, about 19 law schools in the US acknowledge GRE.
GRE consists of general test and subject test. In these tests, the verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and critical thinking skills of a candidate is assessed. The test is about 3 hours 40 minutes long and consists of six sections. A 10-minute break is given after the third section of the examination.
