GRE consists of two tests – GRE General test and GRE Subject test.
GRE general test assesses 3 sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. It is the only admission test for graduate or business schools, that allows you to skip questions, go back, modify your answers and also answer the questions in a sequence you wish to. GRE general test examines how well a candidate responds to situations faced in the business world.

On the other hand, the GRE subject test assesses your knowledge in a specific field of study. It is a paper-based test that showcases your understanding and familiarity with the subjects. IT also helps making your application stand out from the others while gaining admission into graduate programs of your choice.
You need to have a strong educational background in a specific field of study to appear for this test. The subject tests being offered currently are Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology and are conducted thrice a year: September, October and April.
