Namaste,

I am a Neurosurgeon, passionate about Yoga and I would like to tell you that our body responds to physical or mental stress by increasing sympathetic nervous system activity, thus raising blood pressure, however many yoga practices relax the mind and body, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to normalisation of all functions of body and mind.

Now, it is true that some yoga practices do increase blood pressure, most of the yoga practices calm down the body and mind.

There is clear mention of contraindications for yoga practices in a specific manner. One should ask the Guru and avoid exercises which are contraindicated for him/her according to their condition.

There are specific yoga practices for high blood pressure, which performed regularly can lead to normal blood pressure.

I have seen many of my patients recovering well and they have stopped medications for high blood pressure.

Best wishes for a healthy and happy existence.
