Iyengar yoga is based in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali -- which guides you towards peace of mind and ultimately to bliss (Samadhi). Many people split yoga into 4 different types -- Raja, Jnana, Bhakti and Hatha. B. K. S. Iyengar considered all types as a whole, not to be practised individually.

The primary difference between Patanjali Yoga and Iyengar Yoga lies in their focus and approach: Patanjali Yoga: Patanjali Yoga, also known as Classical Yoga, is a philosophical system outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It encompasses the eight limbs of yoga, including ethical principles, physical postures (asana), breath control (pranayama), concentration, and meditation, aiming for spiritual realization and liberation (moksha). Iyengar Yoga: Iyengar Yoga, developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, emphasizes precise alignment, use of props, and prolonged holding of poses to achieve physical and mental benefits. It focuses on the details of each asana, promoting strength, flexibility, stability, and body awareness, making it accessible to practitioners of all levels and physical abilities. While both approaches share the goal of enhancing well-being and self-awareness, Patanjali Yoga provides a comprehensive philosophical framework for spiritual growth, while Iyengar Yoga concentrates more on the physical and mental aspects of yoga through meticulous alignment and practice. read less
