Covalent bonds are formed between elements that can not afford to donate their valance electrons or accept large no. Of electrons to form stable compounds. A covalent bond is formed when two or more elements mutually share the pair of valance electrons.
Carbon is an element with four valance electrons and forms covalent bonds. When carbon forms a covalent bond with itself, it can form an extended change of molecules, its property of self linking through covalent bonds called Catenation. This property leads to the formation of polymers like poly-ethene and others.
