In the previous chapter, you studied what is matter and some interesting
properties related to the matter. Now, in NCERT Science Book Class 9 Chapter 2,
you’ll go a step further and try to find out whether the matter we are talking about
is actually ‘pure’ or not? For a layman, the word ‘pure’ means something that is not
contaminated such as pure water, pure milk, pure vegetables and fruits. However,
scientists have a different definition of ‘purity’ of a matter. According to them, a
substance is pure only if it consists of a single form of matter. It means all the
particles in that matter or in that substance have the same chemical nature. Isn’t it
interesting?
However, if we look around, we find that most of the matter consists of two or
more particles of different nature. For instance, whether we talk about rainwater,
milk, soil, they are a mixture of two or more components. In NCERT Solutions for
Class 9 Science, Chapter 2, you’ll study about mixtures and their properties in
detail.
2.1 What is a Mixture?
2.1.1 Types of Mixtures
2.2 What is a Solution?
2.2.1 Concentration of a Solution
2.2.2 What is a suspension?
2.2.3 What is a Colloidal Solution?
2.3 Separating the Components of a Mixture
2.3.1 How can we obtain coloured Component (Dye) from Blue/Black Ink?
2.3.2 How can we separate Cream from milk?
2.3.3 How can we separate a mixture of two Immiscible Liquids?
2.3.4 How can we separate a mixture of Salt and Camphor?
2.3.5 Is the Dye in Black ink a single colour?
2.3.6 How can we separate a mixture of two Miscible Liquids?
2.3.7 How can we obtain different Gases from Air?
2.3.8 How can we obtain pure copper sulphate from an impure sample?
2.4 Physical and Chemical Changes
2.5 What are the Types of Pure Substances?
2.5.1 Elements
2.5.2 Compounds
Section 2.1 – In this section, you’ll learn what a mixture is all about, different
types of mixtures, what is a substance, and differences between homogeneous and
heterogeneous mixtures.
Section 2.2 – In this section, you’ll study solutions in detail. You’ll be able to
answer questions like what is a solution, properties and examples of solutions,
what is the concentration of a solution, three methods of expressing the
the concentration of a solution, what is a suspension and its properties, what is a
colloidal solution and its properties, etc.
Section 2.3 – In this section, you’ll study some very interesting experiments to
separate components from their heterogeneous mixtures such as separating a
coloured component from blue or black ink, cream from milk, a mixture of two
immiscible and miscible liquids, a mixture of salt and camphor and more.
Section 2.4 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about physical and chemical
changes in matter with some relevant examples.
Section 2.5 – In this section, you’ll come across different types of pure substances
such as elements, compounds, along with their properties and examples.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams, activities and examples
with their solutions for a clear understanding of Is Matter Around Us Pure? To
know more about NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Chapter 2 you should explore the
exercises mentioned in this chapter. You can also download the Is Matter Around
