In this chapter, you’ll study what matter is and its importance in our day to day
lives. It is interesting to know; whatever we see around us is actually made up of
matter, including us! This is because matter is something that has mass and
occupies space- whether it is air, stars, planets, book, chair, a drop of water,
anything you name, is a form of matter. Modern scientists have classified matter
according to the physical properties and chemical properties of matter.
In NCERT Science Book Class 9 Chapter 1, you’ll study physical aspects of the matter
in detail, and will be able to answer questions such as what matter is made up of,
different states of matter, changes in the state of matter and more.
1.1 Physical Nature of Matter
1.1.1 Matter is made up of Particles
1.1.2 How small are these Particles of Matter?
1.2 Characteristics of Particles of Matter
1.2.1 Particles of Matter have space between them
1.2.2 Particles of Matter are continuously moving
1.2.3 Particles of Matter attract each other
1.3 States of Matter
1.3.1 The Solid State
1.3.2 The Liquid State
1.3.3 The Gaseous state
1.4 Can Matter change its State?
1.4.1 Effect of Change of Temperature
1.4.2 Effect of change of Pressure
1.5 Evaporation
1.5.1 Factors Affecting Evaporation
1.5.2 How does Evaporation cause cooling?
In Class 9 Science Chapter 1, one will learn –
Section 1.1 – In this section, you’ll study the physical nature of the matter. You’ll
learn some important properties of matter through various experiments.
Section 1.2 – In this section, you’ll learn about some important attributes of
particles of matter with the help of simple activities.
Section 1.3 – In this section, you’ll come across three states of matter such as the
solid-state, the liquid state and the gaseous state. You’ll also learn the various
characteristics of these three states.
Section 1.4 – In this section, you’ll find answers to questions such as whether the
matter can change its state or not and if yes, then how and what is the effect of
change of the temperature as well as pressure in matter.
Section 1.5 – In this section, you’ll learn what evaporation is, factors affecting
evaporation, etc. You’ll also get to know why you should wear cotton clothes in
summers and why do you see water droplets on the outer surface of a glass
containing ice-cold water.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams, activities and examples
with their solutions for a clear understanding of Matter In Our Surroundings. To
know more about NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Physics Chapter 1 you should
explore the exercises mentioned in this chapter. You can also download the Matter
