To understand yourself is the beginning of wisdom and when I say ' to understand yourself', that means to understand your whole process of thinking because our whole life is based on thinking. My dear our minds are already full of knowledge, emotions, judgements, hate, anger, jealousy and so on. To meditate is to empty the mind of its content so that there is space and without space you cannot explore the unkown. Any form of dependency breeds fear and hence conflict!
