Same is the case with addiction one quits a small pleasure for a bigger one. Meditation is the extreme delight. 

Addiction is more a phsychological disease than phsyical.

Yes it can. Addiction happens to a person as an escape mechanism for loneliness. If a person cultivate a habit to be comfortable with his own existance without external means he will overcome addiction. Better done with a teacher during the initial phase.
