Hi Kedar,
There isn't as such pass or fail in IELTS. It depends on the purpose of your attempting it. People appear fo this test for various purposes such as unskilled work visa, skilled work visa, for doing a diploma, for doing a degree, for doing a PhD, for PR visa.
If your purpose is to study abroad, it depends on the course, University and country. Most of the Universities expect you to have not less than the six-band score in all the four modules. However, there are a few colleges do accept not less than 5.5 in each and an overall 6.

Firstly, logically speaking, improvement in anything depends on the quality time that you spend on it. Unless you dedicate at least one or two hours daily, you cannot accumulate vocabulary.
Secondly, it should be known that learning vocabulary is not as same as learning it for a specific English test because not all tests require the same word power. While GRE demands obsolete vocabulary (ex: pulchritudinous for beautiful), PTE requires you to know the most appropriate word to be used in a particular context (ex: the type of music that we enjoy _____ (illustrates/denotes/reflects) who we are. And IELTS tests if you know the synonyms or paraphrased expression for a word or group of words (ex: an accident that occurred in the skies = aviation disaster).
As the motive decides the manner, so the purpose chooses to the procedure.
Therefore, knowing the etymology of the words helps immensely for GRE, but it is absolutely a waste of time while preparing for other tests.
The best thing is to know the most frequently used prefixes, suffixes and root words which can help reasonably well for all tests.
Of course, for longer and better results, one should put in practice what one learns.
