We don't have to heal the chakras - that's not where the source of the trouble is, we have to heal our habits of thinking and doing. Negativity is basically in the mind which is the den of ego and ignorance (Asmita and Avidya). Without Yama-Niyama, the basic Raja Yoga principles of right living, there is no way you can reach higher levels. Most of the people who talk of chakras, are just doing a commercial packaging. There is no short cut to Self-Realization. -

Dear friends, it is true that each yoga practitioner would come from his/her experience and your responses are extremely good.. The eight limbs of yoga-sutra provide the essential structure and the milestones that are generic. While one may exercise choices on the individual routes the structure and the milestones are non-negotiable. Asanas are intended to stabilize physical, emotional and intellectual bodies to facilitate the spiritual progress; Pranayama rejuvenates our own fountainheads of energy so that the inner states of pratyahar & beyond could be sustained. Yama-niyama provide the firewalls to protect the pranayama from internal and external obstacles. Perfecting yama-niyama is almost a continuously improved process without any end but serving a need for the time being at a level of the asana & pranayama. Attaining pratyahar is a break through point that opens the inner doors.First we reach a state of dharana, where we put a lot of efforts to herd inside the straying attention. When the efforts are not needed it becomes dhyana and when the awareness of all this is also lost, a samadhi. These three stages all at once is sanyama. Thus, the first four are to be practiced together until pratyahar and the later three are consecutive states to be achieved along the advanced pranayama. The importance of practice and devotion can never be emphasized enough. In my view, the perfection in yama-niyama is usually a gift from the inner guru, the soul. read less

Excellent answer Hans. I would like to add my ignorance on this topic. All the 8 limbs of ashtanga yoga will be developed simultaneously. it is not linear. So, even if one is not sound in yama and niyama, but intends to improve, then asana and pranayama will modify mind to such an extent that the person...

Excellent answer Hans. I would like to add my ignorance on this topic. All the 8 limbs of ashtanga yoga will be developed simultaneously. it is not linear. So, even if one is not sound in yama and niyama, but intends to improve, then asana and pranayama will modify mind to such an extent that the person will be able to follow yama and niyama in right spirit. Hathayoga influences rajayoga and rajayoga influences the grosser layers. So, if a person starts with any anga of yoga, then the wheel is set in motion for all other angas. Please forgive me for my ignorance. this is what I feel I should express. read less

Dear Atman, Sri Atmajyoti Prasad Ji ! Thank you for pitching in. No, what you said was not ignorant. It may actually happen the way you wrote. But it may not, too ! There have been many cases where a practice of certain Yoga / Tantra technique without proper anchoring in Yama-Niyama has resulted in power without wisdom - it's like packaging a great power under the bonnet of an automobile without right control on the steering. It can harm others, and it inevitably harms that person too, because whatever goes out comes right back. What we can say is that after sincere intention and earnestness - even if not literal perfection - in the practice of Yama-Niyama, one can proceed to higher steps of Ashtanga Yoga and one would find that regular devotional practice of Pranayama, Pratyahara and the three culminating steps (Samyama, the trio of Dharana-Dhyan-Samadhi) will actually remove any imperfections in Yama-Niyama practice. But sincerity in intention and earnestness have no substitute, no compromise. The learning can go on, but there is a basic qualification first needed. Devotion is as important as technique, often more. We cannot fool God or Divine laws ; we may think we are fooling God but we actually fool ourselves. The soul is already Divine ; we do not have to achieve that. All we must do - sincerely and earnestly - is removing the dirt of ego and ignorance (Avidya and Asmita) from the soul-diamond, and it reflects Divine light. When we seek power, when we seek gifts of God in preference to loving God for Himself (or Herself if one is adoring God as Divine Mother), the result is not in our interest - and the discipline that we are then put to, is a Divine Grace again. The Divine never ever stops loving us and all Cosmic Laws are meant to bring us to a harmony that can help restore us to our native Divinity. read less

Food alone doesn't help strengthen muscles by eating every food that doesn't involve the machining process; it is as simple as that. Like if you agree :)
