Ashtanga - "Ashta" means eight and "anga" means parts. As per the Patanjali yoga sutra, there are 8 stages. Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Prathyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. To progress in the path of yoga one must follow these stages one by one under the guidance of a guru/ teacher. This Ashtanga yoga is also called Raja yoga. And don't confuse this Ashtanga yoga(Raja yoga) with the Ashtanga style of yoga by pattabi jois.
