You will need to basically understand the accent (which means sound differentiation as well as syllables and pronunciation). Also there should be a degree of fluency when you speak, because the speaking test gauges you on thought clarity and flow along with the other areas. Start first by developing a habit of speaking in English and aslo acclimatize your ears by listening to English Channels read less

I have given TOEFL exam two times. It's not at all difficult but yes a bit level higher than IELTS. All you need for TOEFL is Time Management, Great Vocabulary + Idioms and also Good Accent for Speaking. Whereas for Reading you need High Concentration along with familiarisation with the whole text.

Hi Dakshin, I don't propose to know more than the others in this community. But I personally teach IELTS, PTE and TOEFL and therefore think I can say a few words about them. IELTS is fully paper-based and there is human interaction at certain points. TOEFL is computer-based. For some it is not very comfortable taking a test with a headset mic and clicking next etc. So the comfort level is different - we are more comfortable with the traditional paper-based tests rather than the new computer-based. But you are the young generation and tech-savvy and should not find the computer-based test a problem at all. Now coming to preparation. Please observe the following: 1. very clearly understand the format of the test. 2. the day you decide to take this test, start reading good material, the language of which will approximate that of TOEFL - I can suggest IELTS Academic Reading passages, the Economist app which you can download on phones 3. You must download and familiarise yourself with a comprehensive list of collocations and idioms 4. TOEFL word list is easily available on internet for instant download - don't learn them by heart. Read a bunch of them everyday for about 10 minutes. That way, very soon you will start to use them in your essays. 5. You should practice writing essays and get them checked by someone who is good in English 6. you should practice directly typing in a desktop keyboard so that you get practice. There are many other things you can do. Too many to list here. Whether you take coaching or not is your choice. But you will need to do a lot on your own too. Any further clarification, drop me a line. All the best. read less

According to me for TOEFL and IELTS intermediate knowledge of grammar, vocabulary is a must for writing tasks. Style of writing compound complex sentences is also important. Moreover development of good listening would help you in scoring more. Minimum 2.5 m months of preparation is a must.
