TOEFL Registration

There are 3 ways to register for the TOEFL exam:

• Online
• By mail
• By phone

Before beginning to register for TOEFL exam from the ETS website, make sure you have an identity proof, that you will have to carry to the TOEFL exam center on the test day as well. The identity proof must have the following :

a) Candidate’s full name

b) Candidate’s photograph

c) Authentic and original

d) Valid (in nature)

e) Candidate’s signature

For Indian students , a valid passport is a good identity proof for TOEFL exam.

Please note, photocopies of identity documents are not accepted by TOEFL or ETS.

The following are unaccepted list of documents by ETS in regards to TOEFL exam registration:

• Photocopied/invalid document
• Any document that does not exactly match the name you used when you registered
• International driver’s license
• Draft classification card
• International student ID
• Credit/debit card of any kind
• Notary-prepared letter or document
• Birth certificate
• Social security card
• Employee ID card
• Any temporary ID card
• Diplomatic, consulate or embassy ID card

Online Registration of TOEFL exam

TOEFL online registration is possible in all 7 days of the week, across 24-hours of the day.

Please note, for online TOEFL exam registration, an applicant must register 7 days in advance from the test day.

To get your preferred test location and date, ETS recommends to do your TOEFL exam registration 4 months in advance.

Online TOEFL exam registration process:

a) Browse the official website of ETS.

b) Click here to register for TOEFL exam.Refer to the link.

c) Create an online profile

d) State clearly how you would like to receive the TOEFL exam score (web only or web form and paper form, sent by mail)

e) There is no BACK option while navigating and registering online for TOEFL exam

f) First timers can start their TOEFL exam registration from the ‘Sign Up’ option.

g) The TOEFL exam registration process initially has three stages –

• Contact Information
• Identifying information
• Username and password

h) On getting valid TOEFL username and password, you can log in thereafter to select your location and exam date.

i) Here you have to also mention the name of institutes (up to 4) where you want ETS to send your TOEFL score for free.

j) This is the last session of TOEFL online exam registration where you have to do the required fee payment. Payment of TOEFL exam fees during online registration is possible in the following ways –

American Express®, Discover®, JCB®, MasterCard® or VISA®, PayPal® account, or an electronic check (e-check).

Late registration by phone for TOEFL exam closes at 5 p.m.

Phone registration closes 7 days before your test date.

When registering for TOEFL exam via phone, the payment methods are – credit/debit card: American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or VISA; or with an electronic check (e-check).

TOEFL exam registration by mail

To register for TOEFL exam via mail you have to clearly fill the form.

In the TOEFL mail registration form, you have to fill some codes which you can search by clicking here.

Payment in TOEFL mail registration method is specified in the form itself. Students can pick any one of the form of payment method.

Address where the manual form needs to be sent is given in the form only or to your Regional Registration Center.

Mail forms must be received by ETS at least four weeks before your test date.

While registering for TOEFL exam via mail, make sure you specify at least two preferred exam location.

If case of no response from ETS about TOEFL exam registration, you can call the location where you mailed your paperwork.

Re-scheduling/ Canceling TOEFL exam

In case of emergencies, you can ‘Cancel’ or ‘Reschedule’ your TOEFL examination.

You can alter the TOEFL examination three days prior to the date scheduled. You can do it over phone or online. In both the cases, do keep your registration number in hand to do the follow-up proceedings.

In case of cancelling the TOEFL test, you get half of the fees you paid while registering.

In case of rescheduling, you have to pay an additional fees.

Eligibility criteria for TOEFL exam

There is no age/academic qualification criteria for TOEFL exam.

Noteworthy points about TOEFL exam registration

1. If you do not bring valid and acceptable identification, or if the name on your ID does not exactly match the name on your registration, you will not be permitted to test and your test fee will not be refunded.
2. There is no walk-in registration for TOEFL exam in the TOEFL exam centers.
3. ETS does not accept TOEFL exam fees in the following forms – cash or demand drafts, post-dated checks, receipts for bank checks and UNESCO coupons.
4. Those who pay the ETS TOEFL exam fee by e-cheque must mention the following:
   Bank account number
   ABA/bank routing and transit number
5. Those who pay the ETS TOEFL exam fee by paper cheque must mention the following:
   Bank name
   Bank address
   Cheque number or money order number
   Payer’s name and address
   Valid Signature
