The shortest segment of TOEFL exam is the Speaking part. This is held right after the break or Listening exam.

There is no human examiner involved in the TOEFL iBT speaking exam. You have to record each of your response for given number of questions through a microphone attached to headphone. While recording your response, it will be only your voice and no other kind of sound.

In the Speaking section, you have listen to audios and then summarize them, provide your opinion on them or report about opinions given by speakers of the audio.

Among the 6 questions of the speaking exam, the first two are independent tasks and the last 4 are integrated task. Independent task implies you have alone speak for that question. For integrated task, along with speaking you have to read, write or listen.

Task III + Task IV of TOEFL iBT Speaking exam

First you will read an information then hear an audio on the same subject, and then explain what you heard in the microphone which is your response in for TOEFL iBT Speaking section. The audios of task III and task IV are different in nature. While the former is a students conversation, the latter is a professor’s lecture (mostly).

Task V + Task VI of TOEFL iBT Speaking exam

Here, you will only listen to a conversation first and answer questions based on the same by speaking. There is no reading involved in this phase of speaking exam.

a) Two key considerations that you should focus on during TOEFL iBT Speaking section is pronunciation and grammar. These are two primary aspects on which TOEFL test takers are marked.

b) Before beginning to attempt the TOEFL iBT speaking exam, make sure your headphone and microphone are in working state. In case its not, please feel free to reach out the TOEFL exam invigilator.

c) Usually if at your exam center, there are many TOEFL iBT exam test takers, then all tends to attempt the Speaking exam at the same time. This makes all test takers speak at the same time which can be distracting. However, you should learn to ignore all kinds of sounds and noise around, only focus on what you speak and record.

d) For each question of TOEFL iBT speaking section, do invest a solid 15-second to plan your answer in mind. Beginning to record without planning may make you speechless or go out of content in between.

e) Do not over talk or less talk during TOEFL iBT speaking exam.
