Task I of TOEFL iBT Writing section

The first TOEFL iBT write-up is an integrated work where test takers have to write after reading and hearing a content. The time assigned for this is 20-minutes. The word limit ranges around 200-225.

Task II of TOEFL iBT Writing section

The second writing assignment of TOEFL exam is an independent task where test takers have to write about a given topic or convey their opinion on the same. The word limit is around 300 and the time limit is 30-minutes.

TOEFL iBT Writing section score

The writing segment of TOEFL iBT is marked by two examiners on a range of 1-5. In case the average score of both the examiners do not match, a third examiner is appointed for final score.

a) Common mistake

The most common mistake in TOEFL iBT Writing section happens in the first task where students simple start to what they read or heard. Please do not do the same. The aim of the first task in TOEFL iBT exam (writing section) is to analyze your understanding capability. Hence, go deep inside the content provided and explain your understanding. Do not repeat, what is already provided as content of the first task of TOEFL iBT Writing exam.

b) Examples and quotes

In both the write-ups of the TOEFL iBT exam you have the scope to add examples and quotes. However, try not to add quotes until you are very sure about it. Coming to example, state only if they completely align with the given topic. A quote or an example amidst a TOEFL essay just to exhibit your knowledge with no connect to the given topic might really not yield good score.

c) Time management tip

Though the total time span ultimately comes to almost an hour, yet the specific time split of TOEFL iBT essay is – first task (independent task) : 20 minutes and a total of 30 minutes for the next one. However, from the total of 50 minutes of TOEFL iBT Writing exam, do keep around 5 minutes at the end to revise your essay. Every writer tends to find mistake when they revise.
