Good Question- As far as performance is concerned, Indian Police forces are rated among the best in the world. However, when it comes to image, they are rated among the worst. The main reason for the difference in performance and perception lies in the attitude and behaviour of police personnel. Hence, if programmes for improving the attitude and behaviour patterns of police personnel, especially those at the cutting edge level, viz., police personnel posted in Police Stations, Control Rooms, Traffic Branch, Immigration Counters, Foreigners' Registration Counters etc., are taken up, public perceptions can change, various types of service deliveries by the police will improve and the police would receive better cooperation from its constituents. read less

Many people approach the police when they are having a difficulty, and at that point, they anticipate a sympathetic response from the officers. They also anticipate that their issues, no matter how minor, would be given first priority. In reality, the majority of police stations, especially those in urban areas, always have their hands full and struggle to even deal with the most serious issues. In the process, issues that are minor in the eyes of the police frequently get ignored.Yet, for the person who went to the bother of approaching the police with the issue, his problem is the most significant one, and he gets agitated if his complaint is not swiftly addressed and he is not given a sympathetic ear in the police station. The cops have to deal with this serious problem every day. If they have a sympathetic and helpful attitude, they will listen to all complainants patiently and sympathetically, try to assist the complainant, and explain their challenges to the complainant if they are unable to act immediately on the complaint or if they lack the authority to take any action at all.The complainant may not be entirely satisfied if the police take this action, but his hostility will be reduced. Many complaints that are brought to a police station are regular in nature, and if the police staff can handle them diplomatically, they can encourage reconciliation and long-lasting peace between the parties to the conflict. In India, the arrests that are typically undertaken under the preventative parts of the legislation are frequently not entirely warranted and they lead to the escalation of hostility towards the police. The likelihood of this can be reduced if police employees establish a good mindset and problem-solving abilities. The police are not even given a weekly off; they are supposed to be on duty constantly. Police officers experience a great deal of stress as a result of this, the demands of their jobs, and the inherent danger to their lives and limbs. One way this tension shows itself is by acting rudely and aggressively, especially towards the less fortunate people that enter the police station. Stress and aggressive behaviour can lead to inappropriate use of force, the use of harsh language, and other misbehaviours that may even result in issues involving the law and order. The police frequently have a tendency to forget that not everyone who comes into the police station is a criminal or a bad person. In reality, people hardly ever go to the police station on their own; instead, they are usually taken there after being detained. Those who willingly visit the police station include witnesses, complainants of various stripes, and other people who need to do various tasks. The main reason for the negative perception of police in India is that policemen frequently combine these groups of people with criminals and act in a very unfavourable manner with them. If police officers behave better, their service delivery will also automatically improve, leading to a significant rise in client satisfaction. read less
