A covalent bond is different from an ionic bond because an ionic bond requires other highly electronegative or electropositive elements. At the same time, Carbon is neither of them as it has four electrons in its outer shell.
A covalent bond requires sharing of electrons to form a bond between elements. Carbon has 4 electrons in its outer shell; it shares those electrons with other elements to form either a single, double or triple bond. This allows Carbon to form a large number of organic compounds with hydrogen as the main element.
