The formation of bonds is primarily due to obtaining a stable octet configuration. There are two types of bonds: Ionic bond, Covalent bond.
In an Ionic bond, an atom will completely lose or gain electrons and becomes positively or negatively charged, respectively.
In a covalent bond, atoms will not wholly lose electrons. Instead, it will share its electrons with the same or different kinds of atoms.
Carbon can form both types of bonds depending on the situation, but it mainly forms covalent bonds. Covalent bonds are very interesting because the bonding electrons will act as a bridge between two atoms. The ability of carbon to form covalent bonds combined with its ability to form long-chain molecules (catenation) is very powerful. It gives rise to the formation of different molecules, including the ones with which life is made.
