There is no one answer to this. IELTS Examiners are not usually employed by either IDP nor the British Council; most are employed on a part-time basis by franchisees, such as universities or language schools, that set their own remuneration levels. There are some salaried IELTS Examiners, in China for instance, where local conditions make the franchise system impractical.

Considering the high level of qualifications and experience required to be an IELTS Examiner, the remuneration is always modest.

It depends on which country they are working in and for which company (British Council, IDP, etc.) they are working for. In China I believe that speaking examiners are paid around 110 RMB for a speaking test (that’s about £15) and about 30 RMB for every writing task (about £4 per task,...

In China I believe that speaking examiners are paid around 110 RMB for a speaking test (that’s about £15) and about 30 RMB for every writing task (about £4 per task, £8 for task 1 and 2). In all that adds up to around 330 RMB per hour for speaking (£45) and from 600 RMB to 900 RMB per hour for writing (£75 to £100) depending on the speed of the examiner. It’s good money for boring work. Generally China is considered to pay the highest rates because its a full time job here and its hard to find people to come here and who meet visa requirements. Other countries such as India and the UK pay as little as half of these rates.

The salary of an official IDP IELTS examiner is how much they are able to negotiate with their employer. This would obviously be different in different parts of the globe, and would also depend on the examiner's qualification and experience. Thanks, V Bhanot.
