Students appearing for general module find the writing exam tough, and invariably get a low band. One reason is that they have failed to answer the question appropriately. It is imperative to realize that your knowledge is not getting tested; it is your English writing skills that are being tested. In order to improve your writing band, you have to make sure that you read the topic carefully and answer appropriately. For example, if the topic is, ‘suggest solutions to problems faced by the elderly’, you should focus only on writing about ‘solutions to problems faced by the elderly’, not on your knowledge of the problems and challenges the elderly face in the society. For Writing Task 2, you are given a topic to write about, in an academic or semi-formal/neutral style. You have to make sure that you read the topic carefully and provide a relevant response. For example, if the topic is a particular feature of hollywood movies, you should focus only on that particular aspect of hollywood movies in your response and nothing else.
Therefore if you have specifically been asked 'whether the media reports too much bad news', you need to answer only on those lines, and in no other case you need to comment on whether the media reports too much bad news. Thanks, V Bhanot
