"I run for my legs."  and "squats hurt my knees". the regular excuses we listen.  Walking, running , cycling will never work our legs like Squats and deadlifts do.  These strength based movements will help develop our hips, which are typically a major source of injury for runners. As legs are bigger muscles which needs more energy to train helps burn more calories. So its not just about tummy, abs, biceps, triceps but we should give more importance to legs(lower body) for better performance and endurance.
