Properties of muscle tissue:
All muscle cells have several properties—contraction, Irritability, Stretching & Elasticity.
Antagonism is the ability to reduce muscle cells forcefully. For example, to bend the elbow (lessen the angle of the joint), you need to tighten (shorten) the other biceps և other muscles that bend the elbow. Keep in mind that the extensor muscles of the back must be contracted to extend your elbow. So the muscles can only pull, never push.
Irritation is the ability to respond to a stimulus provided by a motor neuron or hormone.
Extensibility is the ability to stretch muscles. For example, let's look at the elbow flexion that we discussed earlier. For elbow flexibility, elbow extensions must extend to allow flexibility. Lack of elasticity is known as spasticity.
Elasticity is the ability to lose weight after stretching or restoring the initial length of the muscles.
