The Britishers were much more powerful than the Indian counterparts, not because they had talent, but because their level of communication, coordination and unity was the best in the world. 

My thoughts -

1. By dividing Bengal, the concept of one India would fall, and "India" will get weak
2. Bengal has a rich culture that the Englishmen thought would help for their benefit
3. Many of the Bengal Maharajas were staunch British supporters

To be frank, what do you mean by developing your personality to be better? How do you want to improve it? There are many aspects of our life that we want to be better at my suggestion-

1. What is the particular thing you want to be better at? (It could be a goal like - I want to be more confident when talking to strangers)
2. Understand what is your current level of confidence (Let's say you are comfortable talking to your family members ) 
3. Then, what is your goal? Let say you want to speak to strangers w/o feeling awkward.
4. Take small steps, with timelines (I'm telling you, there should an end date to everything or else you won't take steps)
5. Acknowledge that you may fail. Be truthful to yourself and rebound.
6. With each step forward, you will be able to achieve your desired goal.
