The British's prime policy of "Divide & Rule" was the Partition of Bengal. Although the British cited administrative convenience as the reason, the British's real intention was to weaken Bengal, which was then the epicentre of Indian Nationalism.
The divide was ideated on two grounds:
In the wake of the Swadeshi & Boycott Movement, the partition was annulled by Lord Curzon in 1911. Still, Bihar and Orissa provinces were carved out of the Bengal Province and separate administration areas based on a linguistic criterion.
