The SAT exam is divided into SAT Reasoning Test and SAT subject based Test. SAT measures the logical and critical reasoning of a student. Hence, the mandatory test is also known as SAT reasoning test.
SAT reasoning Test Pattern:
The test is for 3hours and 45 minutes and comprises of three sections:
1. Critical Reading includes sentence completion and passage-based reading questions.
2. Mathematics includes multiple-choice and response questions based on high school maths.
3. Writing includes multiple choice questions and a written essay. The essay score ranges from 2 to 12.
The total score for each section is on a 200- to 800-point scale, with 10-point intervals. For all multiple choice questions one mark is awarded for correct answer and quarter of a mark is deducted for wrong answer. There is no penalty for leaving a question unanswered.

SAT subject based Test Pattern:
The SAT Subject Tests are one-hour-long exams that give you the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and showcase achievement in specific subjects. Colleges use SAT Subject Test scores in combination with other factors (high school marks, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, essays, etc.) to make admission decisions. Many colleges also use Subject Tests for course placement and advising; some schools allow you to opt out of introductory courses by taking certain Subject Tests. You can select the Subject Tests and can take up to three tests in one sitting. Details and practice tests can be found here
