For common people it is always difficult to understand metaphysical concepts like dhyan, moksha as they do not have dimensions for visualization. That is the reason the concept of Yoga = asanas (yogic postures) have flourished especially in western world. In Astang Yoga, as the previous speakers have said, the first two: Yama ( social code of conduct) and Niyama ( personal code of conduct) are essential to master before learning asanas (yogic postures). The importance of Yama and Niyama can be explained by a simple metaphor. An artist cannot paint canvas which is muddy and filthy, similarly a person cannot become a true yogi unless he practices Yama and Niyama in his daily life. These are also termed as sadvritta or good conduct in Ayurveda. read less

Most books on yoga now a days are based on the western interpretation based on the body level. Whereas, yoga's work on body(Annamaya kosha) is just a beginning. And a long way to go. My friend this could be due to mainly two reasons, 1st people are not aware of complete science & philosophy of yoga. they just think of postures as a yoga. 2nd many teachers are just half baked and they don't know the proper way of delivering info and knowledge to enlighten others. -Ananda Bodhi
