The IAS (Indian Administrative Service) Mains exam consists of nine papers. The subjects are as follows:
Paper A - Indian Language: This paper is to test the candidate's proficiency in the chosen Indian language (selected from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution).
Paper B - English: This paper is to test the candidate's proficiency in English.
Essay Paper: Candidates are required to write essays on multiple topics. This paper aims to assess the candidate's ability to express their thoughts clearly and coherently.
General Studies Paper I: This paper covers topics such as Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society.
General Studies Paper II: It includes Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.
General Studies Paper III: This paper covers Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
General Studies Paper IV: This paper assesses Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
Optional Subject Paper I: Candidates can choose one optional subject from the list of subjects provided by the UPSC.
Optional Subject Paper II: Similar to Paper I, this paper is also on the candidate's chosen optional subject.
Candidates have the flexibility to choose their optional subjects from a list of subjects, which includes literature subjects, social science subjects, and science and engineering subjects. The IAS Mains exam is a crucial stage in the selection process for the Indian Administrative Service.
