If you want to go on a student visa, then you have to give IELTS ACADEMIC, as this is designed for the academic writing.
Whereas, the one, wants directly PR from India , for the point system requirements they need to give IELTS GENERAL, the main objective of this test is to check whether the person is able to understand the normal life situations or he will be able to manage in English speaking country or not.
