Nitrogen fixation:
It happens in the soil, the nitrates with the help of bacteria forms ammonia.
Process:
Nitrogen is fixed when lightening happens in the atmosphere as the nitrogen is a strong bond. This lightening breaks the bond and makes the oxygen to react with nitrogen to become nitrogen oxides. After further cooling this settles in soil by becoming nitrate; then after it reacts with bacteria and forms ammonia.
