In this chapter, you’ll learn about ‘cell’, which is considered as the fundamental
unit of life. What do you mean by cell? A ‘cell’ actually means a ‘small room’. It was
first Robert Hooke, an English Botanist who used the word ‘cell’ to describe as the
fundamental unit of life in 1665. The structure of an organism as well as the
functions performed inside, all are done with the help of cells. In fact, cell is the

Section 5.1 – In this section, you’ll study what living organisms are made up of. It
is interesting to know that all living organisms are made up of cells. You’ll also
learn about unicellular (single cells that live on their own) and multi-cellular
organisms and get a clear understanding of what is an amoeba, chlamydomonas,
paramoecium and bacteria.
Section 5.2 – In this section, you’ll learn about the different characteristics of cells.
You’ll also come across related terms like plasma membrane or cell membrane,
cell wall and plasmolysis, nucleus and cytoplasm. You’ll be able to answer
questions like what will happen if you put an animal cell or a plant cell into a
solution of sugar or salt in water. You’ll also learn what are chromosomes, the role
of a nucleus, eukaryotes, the difference between a prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic
cell and much more.
