read lessHi Chandana,I came across this question many a time from a lot of inquisitive learners like you-
What should I do to improve my reading and writing skills?
First,I want you to draw the relationship between the afore-mentioned linguistic skills.
Reading is a receptive skill whereas writing is a productive skill meaning thereby that you cannot improve your writing unless you improve your reading.Reading comes first as what you read stays in your mind, provided you understand the whole content.
To be able to understand or comprehend a text, you need to read first.
Separate understanding from reading initially, read like a greedy reader;read for pleasure;read stories that you left a long way back.As you read more and more, you will find that your power of comprehension increases, you will soon be able to guess the meaning of several words you don't know just by referring to its context.
As you upgrade your reading level, you might start reading blog posts or novels.Literature is the fundamental way to improve your reading comprehension.Unfortunately,IELTS texts are based on non-fictional academic texts, therefore students never get to read literature.
Don't switch over to intensive reading (where you need to answer any question after reading) unless and until you have had sufficient extensive reading.
Now,start reading newspapers as this content is similar to the IELTS reading texts.
Improve your reading and you will also see a difference in your writing.
Writing has subskills which you will need to master.
In a brief answer,I won't be able to guide you exactly how you can improve your writing.
