Applying for Bank Jobs in India

The Rs 78 trillion (US$ 1.25 trillion) Banking Industry in India is a foundation to the national economy. This makes the banking sector as one of the most sought after career domain in India. The skills learnt in banking careers are absolutely ubiquitous and can be utilized in different enterprises within the industry, or can even be easily shifted to other domains.

Banking jobs have always been one of the most in-demand career options. Job security, decent salary, valuable allowances and pension are some of the key takeaways regarding bank jobs. IBPS conducts exams for various positions like Probationary Officers, Clerks and Specialist officers for the Public Sector and Regional Rural Banks. IBPS Specialist Officers exam is scheduled to be conducted in the second week of February this year.

The breaking news for bank aspirants is that Central Finance department has announced that in the next 3 years, over 86000 vacancies are likely to be filled by public sector banks in India, out of which there will be 35000 vacancies for Officer positions and 51000 for Clerk positions.

Things to Consider Before Applying for a Bank Position

Before applying for any specific position(s), there are 3 things you must consider while applying for a job in Banking Sector: Are you Eligible? Read the job advertisement/notice carefully to see if you’re eligible to take the exam(s) for the respective position(s). What’s the Job Profile? Rather than just applying for all vacant posts take a detailed look into the job responsibilities in those positions to check if they suit your skill set and aspirations. For example, if you’re someone who doesn’t like travelling, then applying for marketing position doesn’t make any sense. Same is for a person who has poor communication skills and applies for a customer service position. Salary, Incentives and Allowances You must know the details regarding the annual salary package, incentives and allowances. Make sure to ask about the pay structure i.e. basic pay excluding incentives, allowances etc. Also make sure to enquire about the salary/stipend during the training period & the remittance cost to be payed in case you quit the job.

There are two primary ways to stay updated with the announcements and applying for a banking job: 1.  Bank's Official Website: This is possibly the most preferred way to check for the job openings in major banks. You can simply login to the respective bank's website and then directly apply for specific openings. 2.  Subscribe to Blogs and Job Portals: There are a number of job portals and blogs to which you can subscribe for receiving timely job updates, merely by registering with them for free. Apart from the exam date announcement, these portals might also provide you with useful information such as Exam Pattern, Eligibility Criteria, Syllabus, Tips, mock tests and last year exam papers and also some links to the resources and study material for the respective exam.
