A chemical bond between 2 atoms formed due to electron sharing is called a covalent bond, for example, c2, N2 and 02.
C has four valency electrons in its outermost shell. So C requires four more electrons to have an octave configuration which makes the atom stable. So C shares 4 electrons with other atoms and takes four more electrons to have an octet configuration.
