Since Carbon has 4 electrons in its outermost shell, it needs to gain or lose 4 electrons to become stable.
There can be two possibilities:
That is why Carbon becomes stable by sharing electrons with other atoms. The covalent bond is the best way for Carbon to complete its octet and become stable.
