A covalent bond is formed when two or more elements combine to complete their valence shell by sharing their electrons rather than complete transfer of excess electrons to fewer electrons element, which happens in an ionic bond.
Carbon has the valence of 4, so it requires a lot of energy to take or release electrons to make ionic bonds; finally, to get stable/inert, they have to create a covalent bond, i.e. sharing electrons.
