A covalent bond involves sharing electrons, unlike in iconic bonds when one atom donates or gains electrons. This is useful for carbon as it can form compounds quickly. Carbon has atomic number =6; hence, filling atomic orbits according to Bohr's model, 2,4 atoms are present. Hence 4 electrons are present in the outermost orbit. A maximum number of electrons can be 8, so carbon can either gain or lose these 4 electrons, but this requires a lot of energy. So to avoid this, the best possible solution is to 'share' electrons with other atoms.
