An ion is a charged atomic or molecular species. It can have a positive as well as a negative charge. An atom or a molecule becomes an ion if it has either excess or deficiency of electrons from its valence shell, molecular orbitals in case of molecules. A specie is said to have a positive charge of it has an electron deficiency, and negative charge of it has electron excess. A positive charge is called a cation and negative one as an anion.

Ion is a molecular or atomic specie with a charge. In molecular science, a charge is nothing but either excess or deficiency of valence electrons in atoms or the highest molecular orbital of a molecule. A charge can be positive when there is a deficiency of electrons, and the corresponding ion is the called cation. In another case, it's called an anion.
