by freeing the mind, sages referred to the cessation(निरोध) of thoughts(vrittis), not suppression(दमन).
and if someone is trying to suppress the thoughts, he can be successful for the short term but eventually, all suppressed things will come out with a great force.
instead, one can observe thoughts and analyze the origin and cause of those, instead of fighting with thoughts.

For beginners, 8-10 rounds of Surya Namaskar and shukshm vyayam are sufficient... progressively develop the practice to fundamental aasanas. Surya namaskar will aid in the development of stamina, while shukshm vyayam will aid in the preparation of muscles/bones/ligaments for the performance of asanas.

Talking about Yog, it is a way of life not merely some aasana and pranayama, one can be aware and do Yog throughout the day.
But if you are talking about the aasana and pranayama, any intermediate and advanced practitioner can perform those anytime of the day, whenever body and mind allow, but again texts suggest performing during braham-muhurat time.
