Singing in the field of popular music doesn't require formal training, although some people have singing lessons as preparation. Many Singers begin as Lead Vocalists with a band. Some develop a career as a Solo Singer at a later stage. Some begin as Songwriters and later perform their own material.

While formal vocal music training can greatly enhance your singing abilities, it's not strictly necessary to become a singer. Many successful singers have developed their talent through self-study, mentorship, or informal training. However, formal training can provide invaluable guidance in vocal technique, breath control, range expansion, and performance skills, ultimately helping singers reach their full potential and avoid vocal strain or injury. Whether formal or informal, consistent practice and dedication are key to honing your singing skills.

No it is not necessary to learn Classical vocals . Kishore Kumar, who is considered ( and is according to me) the king of Bollywood music did not have any formal training. There have been many singers who never had any classical vocals training. But,being a singer myself I feel that one should learn classical music because it opens up the voice due to which it starts sounding better. Also, you'll be able to take variations easily ( as classical music focusses on improvising) . Take the example of some of the current pop singers who have learnt classical like , Shafqat Amanat Ali , Javed Ali , Shankar Mahadevan , Sajjad Ali , RoopKumar Rathod etc. who can sing anything effortlessly .

You may also learn Light music ( pop , bollywood / other than classical) , in which you'll be taught about voice modulation , beat sense , singing with emotions etc.
