I feel like the main vocal in my mixes are always either too loud or too quiet, never really "fits" with the rest of the instruments.

 

How do you guys approach balancing the main vocal in your mix? I've heard that for my type of music (rock/alternative) the vocals are "not as loud as you think" and actually rely more on compression and eq to make it stand out. Is this true? If it is, can anybody give me some tips about it?
