I would say, u need to have knowledge of music and being a good rasika of music is more than enough to learn any instrument. Bcz if one is passionate and dedicated , that's higher than knowledge.

Absolutely not ! Matter of fact most beginners learning any instrument have no knowledge of music. Find a good teacher and you can learn any instrument ..

How many months does it take to learn the veena.
You can learn to play the basics in a few weeks - ie. to play sarali varisa, janta varisa etc. If you practise well, you'll be able to play Geethams in few months , say in 6-7 months (if you learn systematically)....
