The first step towards learning any language is to open your mind to the idea that you DON'T need text books for it. Read the newspaper, talk to people in English whenever you find the opportunity, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes will only help you learn. :)

Well, the first step towards learning any language is to become "a child". The way a child learns its mother toungue from its mother is the unique way to be followed for learning any language. The child did not read any books of Grammer, did not read any newspaper, did not go to a language class. However, it observes all that its parents (esp the mother in the initial stages) do and tries to repeat on and off at every opportunity it gets. The child doesn't have any hesitation to practice it before anyone. Further the child doesn't feel shy to commit any mistake and being laughed at. Becoming a child means displaying the qualities of a child curiosity, learning by observing, no ego and passion to imitate. If one follows these qualities of a child, he can learn any language. English is no exception. read less

I agree with Sunanda's point of view I am not a BEd or MA in English language. But in 1952 I got a firm foundation in English at Cluny Convent School in Bangalore under a British nun called Mother Michael.Today I find that the "highly qualified" English teachers dish out half baked teachings to their language-impoverished students. The standard of the language is so abysmal that even the "butler" will turn in his grave. I have been teaching English through one to one tuitions >private tuitions at my home. In between I did have brief stints at an Arts and Science College as well as an engineering college in Coimbatore. Such colleges ask l their students to voluntarily join the class held either one hour before or one hour after the ususal college hours. read less
