Overview

Work experience:
Joined Hoechst Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Mumbai in October 1966 and worked as a Medical Rep in Tamil Nadu upto March 1999. In the last five years of career had conducted many seminars, Postgrtaduate medical students’ video presentation on medical subjects, organized house surgeons’meets and IMA meetings. Handled super speciality medicines like fourth generation cephalosporins and thrombolytic agents for heart diseases. Rabies was another special subject handled apart from Typhoid.
From June 1999 worked in United Hospital, Coimbatore; organized Master Health Checkup programmes in conjunction with the cardiologist and other specialists. The hospital ran into financial troubles and I had to leave it in June 2000.
Joined Coimbatore Kidney Foundation, Ramnagar, in June 2000 as Executive , Preventive Kidney Care. Job involved promoting the services to GPs in the hinterland, organizing GP meets every fortnight and counseling kidney patients coming to the hospital. Organised several urban and rural kidney care camps.
Left the services in December 2003 since traveling every day was becoming tiresome.
Joined Thulasi Pharmacy India P Ltd in January 2004 and was minding the shop floor interacting with customers and answering queries. Also taught the counter salesmen/girls the various medications and their correct uses, precautions etc. Classes were conducted daily from 3 to 6 pm. Since the salesmen were frequently getting replaced continuity became a problem. The teaching work was discontinued and I left their services in July 2005.
I was abroad with my children upto August 2006. Returned to base thereafter.
Joined Sri Lavanya Hospital, Coimbatore as PRO in September 2006. In June 2007 I left the job owing to a different work schedule being allotted which was not part of PRO function.
Taught school children English and Hindi at my house from July 2007 and in 2010 August I was invited as a guest faculty to Kongunad Arts and Science College, Coimbatore, where I taught English Communication to MSc(IT) and Bsc and B Com students for six months.
I was invited to do a similar programme at Kathir College of Engineering, Coimbatore for six months in 2011. My students were BE I yr, II yr, III yr and all branches were mixed. I am teaching the Marketing staff of Microbiological Laboratory, Coimbatore on all Saturdays forenoon.
I am now doing home teaching of English and Hindi ( spoken only).

Annapurna, the points mentioned by you are very relevant. I find that students who did their schooling up to STD XII in local language find it tough to cope up with the college classes. Moreover they "mug up" their notes and reproduce them faithfully in their exams scoring by fluke a centum. Today even the lecturers are mostly imperfect in their English prowess. Reputed English newspapers like Times of India and The Hindu contain hundreds of grammar mistakes even on the front page. These newspapers have to employ candidates who are available, notwithstanding their poor standards, hence these mistakes.Common finding among my students are that they do not read English newspapers, they do not watch English TV programmes, do not read English books and lastly do not attempt to converse in English.

The standard of the language is so abysmal that even the "butler" will turn in his grave. I have been teaching English through one to one tuitions >private tuitions at my home. In between I did have brief stints at an Arts and Science College as well as an engineering college in Coimbatore. Such colleges ask l their students to voluntarily join the class held either one hour before or one hour after the ususal college hours.

I charge Rs 100 per hour. I have a schedule of 5 hours a week for each student. And I don't believe in having a classroom of a dozen or more students like a school. I give 1 to 1 tuitions in my home. I have only 5 students at present. More numbers will dilute my quality of teaching. ...more

Only by constant speaking, hearing and reading can skills be acquired. Don't shy away from efforts at talking in English with others.
