The Active Voice is used : When the Agent (Doer) of the action is more important than the Object of the action, and he/it needs to be highlighted. Eg. I wrote my English exam yesterday. - Active Voice ( In this case, we normally don't use the Passive Voice form "The English exam was written by me yesterday") The Passive Voice is used : When the object of an action is more important than the subject of the action and hence their positions are interchanged. Eg. People appreciate Moral Truths very much.( This Active Voice form is rarely used.) Instead we say : Moral Truths are very much appreciated (by people.) - This is Passive Voice. A student of English needs to know the sentence structure of both the Active Voice and the Passive Voice, and the Transformation Rules to change the one form into the other. read less

When the receiver of the action is in focus or when the action itself is in focus. A good grammar book will be of great help; or a good teacher.

Make the Object as Subject and use past participle of the verb. e.g. Rama(Subject) eats (Verb) a Mango(Object). Passive would be : A mango is Eaten by Rama.
