You seem to have some self-imposed blockages in learning English. In your mind, you have made English into this huge monster, which it is not. Why smart work works well than hard work for any competitive exam?

Smart work works because you learn how to answer the questions rather than learn the course material. It's not very effective if you're looking to gain knowledge but for competitive exams since time is of essence, it's optimal.
