After the Philippines gained independence from the United States in 1946, Spanish declined rapidly as English became the predominant language of government, education, and business.

 

Today, Spanish in the Philippines is primarily studied as a foreign language by a small number of enthusiasts, academics, and heritage learners. It is not used as a means of daily communication or in official government proceedings. However, Spanish colonial heritage is still evident in some aspects of Philippine culture, including place names, architecture, cuisine, and religious practices.
