What is the difference between a synchronized and volatile keyword in Java?

Synchronized is used both at the method level and block level. It's main purpose is to confine only one thread a method at a time. Volatile keyword is used only for variables. Volatile variable is used in the synchronized context. It can modified exhibiting volatile behaviour.

synchronized is used for a block or method during multithreading. It cannot eradicate a deadlock until resources are handled in a neat arrangement but yes it stops the race condition to hold resources among objects in multithreading environment. It promotes the serial rule. volatile in multithreading environment helps to create one copy of variable in main memory. So when multiple threads access the variable no ambiguity may arise like multiple values in hyper threading. read less
